Summary

The Biomass and Bioenergy Research Group (BBRG) at UBC is dedicated to conducting innovative research and modeling in biomass resource assessment, characterization, supply logistics, pre-processing and conversion of various biomass feedstocks into densified fuels, energy, power and bio-based products.

Primary Activities

  • Develop innovative technologies to supply, process, store and convert lignocellulosic biomass into fuels, heat, power and bio-products
  • Create and apply comprehensive logistical models and decision-support systems to ensure sustainable and economically competitive biomass supplies for the bio-based industry
  • Train and educate young engineers for the emerging bio economy
  • Provide consultation and research services to biomass and bioenergy companies and associations

What are Biomass and Bioenergy?

Biomass is any biological material. BBRG focuses on production, converstion, and use of lignocellulosic biomass. This is the most abundant type of biomass and is found in wood, agricultural residues, and specially grown biomass crops such as switchgrass and poplar.

Bioenergy is energy produced from biomass sources. This can be in the form of power, heat, or transportation fuels such as bioethanol. BBRG works on many different aspects of bioenergy, but our expertise is in biomass logistics, harvesting, pretreatment, and handling prior to final conversion. We have also extensively analyzed entire bioenergy systems, from production to conversion and disposal of byproducts.
